820 Squadron was originally formed in 1972 and was first named 820 Milton Blue Thunder Squadron. It was only in 2005 that the Squadron was renamed to 820 Chris Hadfield Squadron in honour of Col Chris Hadfield, who was a cadet with 820 Squadron from 1971 to 1978. Col Chris Hadfield, through his time with the Squadron, earned his Glider Pilot Licence at the age of 15 and then his Power Pilot Licence at the age of 16.
